Mouthwatering dog treats with a healthy twist

Published by sirenavs at 9:19 am under recipes Edit This

Since all dog owners are looking for new ways to treat their favorite canines, I decided to add another recipe to our recipes list.  This one doesn’t give you the weight gain that the satin balls does and it might not be as meaty as some of the other recipes that I will offer but it is an excellent recipe to try. On top of that, it is pretty healthy and may be just the right treat for your overweight lab that needs to shed a few extra pounds.

What you need:

  • 2 tsps wheat germ (you can use oatmeal if you prefer)

  • 1 lemon rind

  • 3 tblsp butter or margarine

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1 3/4 cups plain flour

  • 1/2 cup ground walnuts

  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients

  2. Mix together

  3. Add the butter gradually, if you find that it is still dry and does not form into a dough, add one or two more tablespoons of butter.

  4. Roll into a log about 1 inch in diameter.  It should make 6 logs.

  5. Cut one log into 1/2 inch thick slices and place on a cookie sheet.

  6. Wrap and freeze the other logs to use later or bake them now.

  7. Bake for 12 minutes at 375 degrees F.

This recipe will make roughly 36 to 48 dog cookies and your dog will enjoy eating every last one of them but remember, too much of a healthy thing can be…well…too much.
